AVOID BELLA ITALIA — I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS CAMPSITE TO MY WORST ENEMY
I have never experienced anything remotely as appalling as our stay at Bella Italia. I strongly urge anyone considering booking a family holiday here to think again.
Our bungalow was burgled and my jewellery was stolen, including... pieces that were not only valuable but carried enormous sentimental value and are completely irreplaceable.
Most disturbing of all, there was no apparent forced entry and the perpetrators appeared to have access to keys. This raises extremely serious questions about how they gained access to our bungalow and about the security of guests' belongings on this site. We were also told that ours was the sixth break-in in just a matter of weeks. If that is accurate, this was not an isolated incident.
What made an already devastating experience considerably worse was the response.
When I reported the burglary to Bella Italia staff and security, I was met with what I can only describe as staggering complacency and an astonishing lack of empathy. At a moment when guests should reasonably expect concern, support and urgent action, their response was utterly inadequate.
The only people who genuinely assisted us were the Topflight staff, who were excellent throughout — but crucially, they are not employed by Bella Italia.
As if having our bungalow burgled wasn't enough, we also spent more than 24 hours without electricity while temperatures exceeded 35°C. That meant no air conditioning to cool our family, no functioning fridge and no ability to charge our phones. In those temperatures, this went far beyond an inconvenience.
Even the most basic tasks became an ordeal. On another day, I needed €15 in change to use the communal washing machines. The change machine in the arcade wasn't working, and four different outlets, including the supermarket, refused to provide change. Reception then refused even to deal with me until I returned to my bungalow to retrieve a voucher. After making that journey and returning with it, they would only give me €5 — despite my explaining that I needed €15 for the campsite's own washing facilities.
The combination of serious security concerns, a devastating burglary, the reported frequency of recent break-ins, the response we received from staff, prolonged loss of electricity in extreme heat, and an extraordinary lack of basic customer service made this, without question, the worst holiday experience I have ever had.
A holiday destination has a fundamental responsibility to take the safety and security of its guests seriously. Based on what we experienced, I could not possibly have confidence in Bella Italia to do so.
Losing valuable jewellery is upsetting. Losing irreplaceable items of enormous sentimental importance is heartbreaking. But discovering that this happened in a place where we should have been able to feel safe — and then encountering such an inadequate response — made the experience immeasurably worse.
I would not recommend Bella Italia to my worst enemy. If you are considering booking this campsite for your holiday, my strongest advice is simple: do not go.
