Camping de L'Etang was the second stop on our three-week tour of northern France. We chose it primarily because we wanted to get close to the Loire, and in that respect it delivered — the location is excellent for exploring the area.
Unfortunately, we were less impressed with the campsite itself. It... was perfectly fine for a couple of nights, but I think we would have been quite disappointed if this had been our main destination for a longer stay.
The site is described as an eco campsite, although to us this seemed to translate into a lot of structures and facilities that felt unfinished or incomplete.
Next to our pitch was an open-air washing-up station with two toilets. The toilets themselves were proper ceramic toilets, but having two toilet cubicles simply attached to the sinks, without any additional enclosing structure, felt rather strange and somewhat inappropriate. It gave the impression that the facilities had been started but not quite finished.
The showers had a similar feel. They were perfectly usable, but they were also outdoors, this time underneath a larger roof. Imagine a barn with no walls, containing lots of individual shower cubicles that are themselves open to the elements — that's essentially what it was like.
The whole site was also very dusty. Because so much of it is open and spread out, very little ever seemed particularly clean. It wasn't dirty as such, but everything had a rather dusty, unfinished feel.
The shop was a real disappointment. It does have the basics such as milk and some wine, but there wasn't much else that you could realistically use to put together a meal. The pre-ordered bakery offering was similarly disappointing.
That said, the location is genuinely excellent.
During our stay we visited Château de Saumur, Château de Brissac and the Troglodyte Village, all of which were wonderful trips out. So if you're using the campsite as a base for exploring the Loire, it does have a lot going for it.
Brissac is the nearest village and has a stunning bakery. You can actually walk there along the river. It was simply too hot for us to do the walk during the day, particularly as we had our dog with us. We did manage the walk one evening, though, and if we'd been travelling without the dog and the weather had been cooler, it would have made for a lovely outing: walk into Brissac, visit the château, pick up lunch from the bakery and walk back along the river.
One word of warning when arriving with a larger touring outfit: don't blindly follow the route you're given to your pitch.
When we arrived, the receptionist marked the route to our pitch on the map. I specifically double-checked with her that it was suitable for us because our caravan and tow vehicle make quite a large touring unit. She assured me it was fine.
It wasn't.
We ended up stuck on a corner and unfortunately damaged the brake lights on our caravan. So, if you're arriving with a large caravan, motorhome or other substantial outfit, I'd strongly recommend having the driver or co-pilot walk ahead and check the route rather than relying solely on the instructions from reception.
So, overall: would I stay here again? Probably not.
Was I disappointed? A little.
Did we still have a lovely time exploring the Loire? Absolutely.
For us, this was a perfectly adequate stopover in a fantastic location, but the campsite itself didn't quite live up to what we were hoping for. If you're looking for somewhere to spend a couple of nights while exploring the surrounding area, it does the job. If you're looking for a campsite where you'd happily spend a week or more, I'd probably look elsewhere.

Good campsite for our stop off for 3 nights before heading further south. Close to the little town can either bike or walk. Camping pitches were ok. Some were very large. Close to the supermarket approx 10mins drive you could also bike it. Great for kids the pool and play areas were good. The pub/restaurant... should open earlier it opens at 5pm. The Parc Etang opposite doesn’t open Mondays nor does the site bar/restaurant. The showers and toilets were not private but I suppose the French were not bothered by this. The showers and toilets were clean though, which made up for them being so open you could hear what your toilet neighbour was doing. At one of the smaller toilet blocks the toilets are on one side, the pot wash area next to toilets then the opposite side the sink which didn’t makes sense as people washing up could hear you on the toilet then you had to walk passed them to wash your hands.
Fishing area wasn’t amazing however it was good for kids or those starting the fishing journey. We did catch some fish.
On a Monday a food truck came which varies week by week, the food was amazing when we were there it was some kind of pitta bread with a filling.
We ate from the restaurant on site the food was good we ate pitta and hummus waffles were great.
Little farm on site with goats and chickens.
Would stay here again.

Wonderful campsite with large well appointed serviced pitch for our motorhome. Lovely welcome and supportive information from the reception team who also run the shop which is well stocked with local produce. Toilets and showers very clean and bar/pool area very pleasant to eat, drink and relax

Lovely welcome on arrival and a bag of treats for our dog. The site is well laid out and our pitch was huge for our VW van and BC2 caravan. The pools were lovely and kept very clean. The showers, toilets and wash up area was also kept clean. The walks round about were fantastic and the walk into... town was around 20mins, where there are shops and restaurants. I’d highly recommend this site and it looks amazing for kids too (ours are all grown up). We stayed for 3 nights which was just perfect for us to explore the surrounding area.
