BELGIUMBelgium is known for its Gothic architecture and its mixture of cultures, Flemish in the north and Walloon in the south. Belgian people speak both Dutch and French. The country shares borders with the Netherlands, Germany, Luxembourg and France. Its capital city, Brussels, is divided in two areas: the lower part, historically housing the working class and immigrants, and the uptown, with breathtaking post modern buildings and its impressive Parc de Bruxelles, a real lung for the city.
Highlights are the Grand Place, the Manneken Pis, the Royal Museum of Fine Arts, the Royal Palace, St. Michel and Gudule Cathedral and the theme park Brupark, perfect for family visits.
In the city centre of the middle-age city of Antwerp you can find the Grote Markt. The narrow streets around it are surrounded by beautiful medieval trade houses, like Vleeshuis. The Chapel of Sint Jacobskerk hosts the grave of Rubens.
Bruges, in the northwest, is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Belgium due to the beauty of its city centre, originally created during the 13th century, when the city was the main centre of international trade of fabrics. The visitor can enjoy boat trips along the river Dijver.
In Waterloo, known for the battle that Napoleon lost against Wellington, you can visit the Wellington Museum and the battle field.
Belgium combines history and nature, medieval buildings and wide plains.
